The house itself is comfortable and well-equipped yet retains the feeling of being from another era. It’s very much a home too (albeit a bit smarter than our real one!). Relaxing in front of the open fire in the sitting room, having tea on the veranda, exploring the pine forest around the house – we enjoyed everything about our time there. I can’t wait to visit again.

For us, Windy Gap has everything for the outdoor family and more. We fell in love with it on our first visit and it is now a firm family favourite as our UK based holiday destination. It offers tranquillity, easy access to nature and freedom for the kids and dog to explore.

Margaret and Paul are the perfect hosts. They keep a discrete distance and yet manage to make you feel so welcome. We have enjoyed many moments with them.

We have yet to be bored. It provides a break from modern life and encourages the children to try new (old) activities from Chess to Tennis, Cards to bike riding and board games. They love it, and enjoy a very diverse knowledge of nature including bramble picking, pond sieving, kite flying, swimming in the sea and dune busting.

If Windy is not enough for you then Southport is a great place to explore and offers everything the family needs or wants from a resort holiday. Local amenities are plentiful and Asda and many food outlets deliver to the door. Formby and Liverpool are close by and there are plenty of National Trust places to visit, including Freshfields which is part of the same woodland/dune system.

If you want peace and tranquillity within a woodland setting you can’t go wrong. It feels like you are enjoying a piece of history, and I know our children will continue to use it with their children. I can’t wait for next time.

What a magical holiday destination! My wife and I with my children have been coming for the last 43 years for a holiday. Even though my children have grown up, Pat and I still love to visit Windy Gap every year. Peace and tranquillity is always assured along with a warm welcome from Margaret and Paul.

We found Windy Gap by accident advertised in a Sunday paper. The year was 1970 and we were looking for an activity holiday away from the crowds. Now, 44 years without a break later, we still love it, our kids love it, and now our grandkids love it.

Everybody does a twenty minute run before breakfast, then tennis or a walk to the beach. There’s Southport and Liverpool a short drive away, also some of the best Golf courses in the world on your door step, heaven!

Margret is always there to help the holiday go smoothly. Can’t wait to get there again!

Windy Gap is like something out of a fairytale – it makes me think of a Russian dacha in the woods or a Hansel and Gretel cottage in the Black Forest. We first heard about it from friends who told us it was something really special and they were right.

We book Windy Gap because it’s a fantastically old-fashioned but comfortable house where you can really get away from it all.

The extensive woodland grounds are perfect for nature walks and spotting red squirrels. We love hiking through the dunes for a picnic and game of cricket on the beach. We have had some wonderful family holidays here over the years.

We’ve had a thoroughly relaxing week at your beautiful hideaway. We’ve had the pleasure of short stays joining family here before, but this time we booked a week for ourselves, and enjoyed sharing the experience with different friends and family throughout the week. All were enchanted by the house and setting.

Our first visit after many years of listening to family stories about Windy Gap. Wish we’d started coming here years ago! How family holidays should be – no tv, beach, walks, and lots of laughter. We’ll be back!

This is another testimonial

Wonderful time spent with family, re-living memories through my son. He’s had an awesome time running free and exploring. Thank you to Paul and Margaret for a fabulous stay.

What an amazing week we have enjoyed at Windy Gap. I can’t believe it’s time to go already. The house was beautifully clean and welcoming as always, and we like the new addition of duvets. We have been blessed with glorious weather, so spent many a day on the dunes. We biked to the beach twice, drove onto Ainsdale beach twice, spent a day in Southport and a day in Liverpool.

Our family cannot thank the hospitality of the Woodmans once again, who have made our stay extra special.
